SPFT Professional Development Leadership Team Description

Team Description:  The Saint Paul Federation of Teachers Professional Development Leadership Team will be active for one year from July 1, 2018-June 30, 2019 with the purpose of working together to continue SPFT professional development course offerings while re-envisioning the local’s PD program. The team will consist of a Team Lead and four (4) team members who are representative of SPFT’s membership. There will be at least one team member to represent the following groups: non-licensed personal (EA and SCSP), elementary school licensure, and secondary licensure. The team lead will drive the work of the team, report to the SPFT executive board on progress, delegate work to team members, and set team meeting agendas.

Position Description: These contracted positions will provide overall project leadership in coordinating the work and roles of  Professional Development in SPFT. The team lead will be directly supervised by the President or staff assigned by the President. All team members will determine an appropriate split of the duties listed below.

  1. Re-envisioning SPFT Professional Development
    • Develop a long-term professional development plan for SPFT that addresses the changing needs of our membership, creates programmatic systems that ensure racial equity, and continues to advance the SPFT narrative and build our union.
    • Use the planning year as an opportunity to pilot new ideas and gather input from members. 
  2. Policies
    • Adherence and implementation of AFT Professional Development policies
    • Revision and dissemination of SPFT Facilitator Manual
    • Knowledge of SPFT contract language and SPFT Executive board policies
  3. Procedures
    • Identify prospective facilitators to attend AFT Summer Educator Academy (needs assessments)
    • Create a training induction and peer review protocol for facilitators
    • Attend Local Site Coordinator meetings and Education Minnesota Professional Conference as appropriate
    • Maintain and order facilitator supplies
    • Participate in appropriate committees where SPFT PD perspective is needed such as ASDC, PAR board, PTVH advisory, ED MN PD steering committee.
  4. Schedules
    • Coordinate with facilitators to create a yearly calendar of course offerings
    • Manage meeting room assignments for SPFT Professional Development offerings 
  5. Record Keeping
    • Promptly reconcile all course paperwork for accurate compensation
    • Reconcile all receipts for expenditures in a timely manner
    • Maintain current list of strand facilitators (locally or nationally trained)
  6. Communication
    • Ongoing communication with SPFT Executive Board and Officers and Staff Director
    • Ongoing communication with course facilitators
    • Coordinate and collaborate with SPPS Professional Development Department
    • Collaborate with PAR Lead, APPT Lead, and Restorative Practice Coordinator
    • Member of the Professional Development Advisory Committee
    • Establish and maintain relationship with accredited higher education institute
    • Promote SPFT Professional Development opportunities


  • Must be a SPFT Member, with a recommit on file, who is committed to maintaining a quality professional development program at SPFT.
  • Able to commit to an average of 8 hours per week in the months of July and August (before opening week) the summer of 2018 and during the month of June 2019 (after school is out).
  • Able to commit to at least one team meeting per month during the school year plus additional duties (as determined by the team) on a flexible schedule. 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience as a participant or facilitator in SPFT professional development
  • Experience in staff development and post-secondary teaching
  • Experience in professional presentations to a variety of audiences
  • Demonstrated leadership skills through additional involvement with SPFT
  • Demonstrated commitment to racial equity work in our schools and union

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Demonstrated commitment to union values
  • Knowledge and skill to access, effectively build relationships and collaborate with others
  • Strong organizational and problem solving skills
  • Highly proficient interpersonal communication skills
  • Demonstrated experience in a classroom setting for licensed staff
  • Ability to seek out and/or develop resources as needed
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about budget management and oversight
  • Availability to commit to this team for a year and meet and work a varying schedule and hours
  • Availability to travel as needed on behalf of SPFT and the PD program

Pay and Work Schedule

This is a contracted, stipend position. Team Members will each be paid an annual stipend of $3,000. Stipends are divided into 12 installments and paid out monthly over the course of the year.

Team members will also be able access up to the equivalent of five union business leave days each during the school year to complete duties.
